Blackfordby St Margaret’s CofE Primary School Project

Blackfordby St Margaret’s CofE Primary School – Derbyshire
• Client: Derby Diocese
• Project: New Teaching Block
• Project Value: £1.3 m
• Services: Architecture, quantity surveyor, clerk of works, M&E engineer, structural
  engineer, CDM advisor
YMD Boon were appointed to provide multi-disciplinary services to design and deliver a new extension to the existing school to enlarge the school from an infant’s school to a full primary, allowing the young children of the area to remain near to home during their primary education.
Careful consultation and review took place with several stakeholders including the local authority, the school and the wider local community.

The accommodation includes four classrooms, a hall, servery, group rooms, administration facilities, a library and toilet facilities.

The new block is timber frame and has increased in height from single to two storeys spiraling around the existing Victorian grade II listed building, with a green roof, air source heat pumps, solar panels and rain water harvesting. The building achieved the BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating process to ensure maximum sustainable design and construction and also the building exceeded any existing building regulation requirements to further extend the buildings sustainable theme.

The existing building is a Victorian Grade II listed and situated in a conservation area. The philosophy behind the design was to try and keep the new addition sympathetic to the adjacent building and its surrounding area. YMD Boon carried out a close consultation with the local authorities, adjacent neighbours and the Diocese in order to obtain full planning permission for the new extension.

The site was extremely tight. Providing all the required accommodations, in the given space; considering planning restrictions proved to be a very challenging task. YMD Boon has designed the extension so it wraps around the existing listed building and slopes up gently towards the end of the site to provide adequate head room for a mezzanine level.
“I cannot tell you how much I appreciate what you have created for us at Blackfordby St.Margaret’s. Our new building is beyond wonderful and this past year has been such a positive experience.

I’m so glad that the diocese and YMD Boon found us, and look what we have achieved together. Thank you for not giving up on us and for overcoming the myriad obstacles which were thrown in our path.  On the eve of ‘handover’ day, I cannot thank you enough.”
