Project Overview

Replacement of disused gym with modern fitness suite supporting students and wider community wellbeing.

YMD Boon was appointed by East Midlands Education Trust to replace a disused gym at Castle Donington College with a modern fitness suite designed to meet current fitness and accessibility standards. The new facility enhances the student experience while also providing a valuable community resource that supports health and wellbeing.

The project involved demolishing an old, dilapidated gym building to make way for a state-of-the-art fitness facility. The new gymnasium includes high-quality equipment, spacious training areas, and improved accessibility, ensuring it caters to a wide range of sporting and fitness activities. Designed to modern standards, the space offers a welcoming and inclusive environment for both students and the wider community.

During the planning process, ecological and arboricultural assessments were undertaken. While initial concerns regarding bats were resolved, a badger sett was identified near the proposed location. As relocation and mitigation measures were not financially viable, we worked closely with the College to identify an alternative site and successfully reapplied for planning permission, avoiding significant delays.

This scheme forms part of a wider phased expansion at Castle Donington College managed by YMD Boon, which also includes a new five-classroom block, extended playground, two-classroom science extension, and a full-size floodlit 3G pitch.
