Project Overview

Designed and delivered a three-storey automotive engineering workshop equipped with specialist teaching facilities.

YMD Boon was appointed by Derby College Group as Lead Consultants to design and deliver a new purpose-built automotive vehicle engineering workshop.

We supported the college in securing £3.5 million in funding through the Department for Education’s Post-16 Capacity Fund. Following approval, we were appointed to develop the design and oversee its on-site delivery.

The three-storey facility features high-quality classrooms, high-level lifts, and a double workshop. Situated at the rear of the existing Stephenson Building on Derby’s Roundhouse site, the building is connected via a link corridor and plays a critical role in supporting students’ advanced technical development. It provides specialist motor vehicle workshops and teaching spaces that accommodate a wide range of engineering disciplines, with a strong focus on sustainable engineering practices and digital design principles.

In line with DCG’s sustainability ambitions, the workshop integrates low-carbon technologies, including air-source heat pumps, thermally efficient materials, and a photovoltaic (PV) array. All works were completed without disruption to the existing building, which remained fully operational throughout the construction period.

The project was delivered in collaboration with the East Midlands Institute of Technology (EMIoT) Centre, located at the front of the Stephenson Building on the Roundhouse site.
