Automotive Vehicle Engineering Facilities

Client: Derby College Group

Project Brief: State-of-the-art automotive vehicle training facilities

Services: Architecture, Principal Designer

Completion: Due to complete in 2024

YMD Boon were appointed by Derby College Group (DCG) as Lead Consultants to design and deliver new purpose-built automotive vehicle training facilities.

Working on behalf of DCG, we assisted the team in securing £3.5m of funding through the Department of Education’s Post 16 capacity fund. Once the funding was approved, we were appointed to develop the design and deliver it on site.

The three-storey building will be in the region of 1150 metres and will incorporate high-quality classroom facilities such as high-level lifts and a double workshop. It will be located at the back of the current Stephenson Building on the Roundhouse site in Derby.

In line with DCG’s sustainability aspirations, the Workshop will aim to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. The build will incorporate the latest building techniques and materials such as air-source heat pumps (ASHPs), thermal resistant materials and solar panels.

The building has secured planning permission, and is anticipated to complete in Autumn 2024, ready for the new academic year.

This scheme is in collaboration with the new East Midlands Institute of Technology (EMIoT) Centre which will be located at the front of the Stephenson building on the Roundhouse site in Derby.
