Project Overview

Feasibility for flexible workplace redesign at Milton Keynes Civic Offices supporting hybrid working.

YMD Boon was appointed by Milton Keynes Council to undertake a feasibility study for the redesign and remodelling of the Milton Keynes Civic Offices, supporting the Council’s transition to a more flexible and modern working environment.

In response to evolving working patterns and the growing demand for hybrid working, the Council sought to significantly reduce the number of permanent office-based staff, enabling approximately 80% of employees to work remotely. The brief focused on reconfiguring the existing office accommodation to create a more efficient and adaptable workspace that better supports collaboration and operational needs.

The existing building currently comprises three floors of workstations and meeting rooms. Our proposals explored a revised spatial arrangement, with the ground floor dedicated to operational and technical teams who require a regular on-site presence. The first floor was designed to provide collaborative workspaces, meeting rooms and informal breakout areas to encourage teamwork and interaction. The top floor was allocated for desk-based workspaces for staff who are unable to work from home.

Throughout the feasibility process, we worked closely with key stakeholders to ensure the proposals responded to the Council’s operational requirements while futureproofing the building for evolving workplace needs. The modernised layout promotes flexible and agile working, creating a more efficient and productive environment for staff.
