Project Overview

Two-storey extension to expand construction training facilities and accommodate rising student demand.

YMD Boon has been appointed as architect and principal designer to extend the Hudson Building at Derby College Group’s Pride Park campus.

The project responds to rising demand for construction and trade courses, including brickwork, joinery, plastering, painting and decorating, and plumbing. The existing Hudson Building, a purpose-built Construction Academy completed in 2012, currently accommodates around 300 students within approximately 3,000 m² of workshop and teaching space but is now operating at capacity.

The proposed two-storey extension will mirror the scale, layout and architectural language of the existing facility, ensuring a cohesive campus environment. It will deliver additional specialist workshops and teaching areas for pre-16 and post-16 learners, as well as apprentices, increasing student capacity by an estimated 75 to 100 places.

The scheme also integrates key safety and sustainability improvements. These include enhanced roof access, installation of man safe systems, and new guard railing to replace reliance on scissor lifts for maintenance. Opportunities to expand rooftop solar provision are also being explored.

Working collaboratively with Derby College Group and the wider consultant team, YMD Boon is helping deliver a future-ready learning environment that supports skills growth and regional economic development.
