East Midlands Railway – Branding Project

Client: East Midlands Railway (EMR)

Project Brief: Design and remodel EMR waiting rooms and toilet areas

Services: Architecture

We were appointed by East Midlands Railway (EMR) to design and remodel the waiting rooms and toilet areas at their stations following a major investment into improvements to their rail services.

East Midlands Railway, operated by Abellio, is currently making significant investments on updating their trains, improving stations and implementing a new brand identity. Part of this investment will focus on the stations, including new waiting areas, additional seating and better lounge areas for all EMR customers.

YMD Boon were brought in to work with multiple stakeholder groups at EMR (including the branding team, project managers, quality managers and security) to ensure that the waiting rooms were comfortable, modern and easy to maintain but also safe and private.

We provided EMR with different models based on the available budget and the size of the waiting rooms. This included high/medium/low specification designs, small/medium/large room size designs as well as single-sex and unisex toilets. We also explored biophilic design concepts by incorporating green walls and living walls into the designs.

We ensured the distinct purple and white branding was evident in our designs and in line with the wider brand identity of EMR.
