Project Overview

Expansion of SEND provision at Headlands Primary School to support 50 pupils.

YMD Boon was appointed by Northampton Primary Academy Trust (NPAT) to expand the SEND Unit provision, ‘The Woodlands’, at Headlands Primary School. The project was designed to increase capacity to 50 pupils across two phases, supporting children aged 4–11 with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).

During Phase 1, YMD Boon undertook a feasibility study, developing schematic layouts and budget costs to support funding approval from the Local Authority. Over a 16-week programme, the existing SEND Unit was remodelled to create two larger, more functional classrooms from three smaller spaces. External play areas were also introduced, alongside dining facilities, office space, toilets, and ancillary areas. The works were carefully delivered within a live school environment, ensuring minimal disruption to staff and pupils while providing a modern, accessible and secure learning environment.

Phase 2 focused on further expanding the provision to meet growing demand. Working closely with the school’s leadership team, YMD Boon developed feasibility options before delivering the agreed scheme from concept through to completion within 12 weeks. This phase included the creation of an additional classroom, widened corridors to improve circulation, and the introduction of a Family Support Office.

Additional enhancements included the conversion of unused toilet areas into a soft play breakout space to support pupil wellbeing, as well as the provision of new staff and pupil toilets, a SENCo meeting room, and increased storage facilities.

The completed development provides a high-quality, adaptable environment that meets the complex needs of its users. It also addresses the wider shortage of SEND places across Northamptonshire, supporting inclusive education and enhancing the school’s ability to deliver specialised learning in a safe, supportive setting.
