YMD Boon Celebrates Reopening of Western Fire Station in Leicester

< Back to All News

YMD Boon attended the reopening ceremony of Western Fire Station, following the major refurbishment and internal reconfiguration of the Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service (LFRS) station.

The Lord Mayor of Leicester, Cllr. Dr Barton, was invited along to reopen the station. In attendance were some of Leicestershire Fire and Rescue’s partners - Leicestershire Fire Cadets, Community Safety, Red Cross, Youth Engagement Officer and Leicestershire Police.

About the Project

Built in circa 1964, Western Fire Station is an iconic feature of Leicester. Although the station has stood as a testament to time, it required a full refurbishment in order to address equality, diversity and inclusion (ED&I) issues, improve segregation between clean and dirty areas, and improve the internal environment.

Initially, YMD Boon undertook a feasibility review to understand the scope of works required to deliver the client requirements and associated costs. Once confirmed, YMD Boon acted as Project Manager during the project construction phase and appointed a multi-disciplinary team to deliver the project.

Revitalising the station’s internal structure, the works comprised of new wet rooms and accessible WC’s, a kitchen refurbishment, internal M&E alterations, and redecoration throughout. External works were also carried out, including roof replacements, redecoration to the access gates, the erection of a new canopy and the installation of external doors and windows to the new community room.

I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation and thanks to the project team for their meticulous planning and careful execution, ensuring that every aspect of the refurbishment was carried out with precision and care. Your commitment to excellence has transformed our fire station into a modern, inclusive and safe hub that will serve our community for years.”
