Alternative Provision Unit

We were appointed by Lionheart Educational Trust to deliver alterations to an existing building, creating a stand-alone alternative provision unit at Castle Rock School. The project was designed to provide a safe, secure, and supportive environment tailored to pupils with additional behavioural and educational needs.

Working closely with the Trust, school, and contractor, YMD Boon developed a comprehensive design incorporating appropriately sized teaching spaces to accommodate a range of subjects. A key focus of the scheme was ensuring controlled movement throughout the building, achieved through a full access control system securing all doors while maintaining compliant and efficient fire evacuation routes.

Due to structural requirements within the existing building, studwork walls were introduced with plywood patressing to both sides, creating a durable and robust construction. Ceiling treatments were carefully specified to maintain security integrity, while furniture included anti-tamper fittings and reinforced elements to withstand intensive use.

Visibility and safeguarding were enhanced through the strategic placement of screens and vision panels, allowing supervision between classrooms and corridors. Additional security measures included a walk-through metal detector and a bespoke secure reception hatch, ensuring a safe and well-managed environment for both pupils and staff.
