Client: University of Derby
Project Brief: Major refurbishment and remodelling to create new EM IoT Centre
Services: Architecture, Principal Designer
Completion: July 2023
YMD Boon were appointed by University of Derby to provide architectural and Principal Designer services for the development of their innovative EMIoT (East Midlands Institution of Technology) centre.
This project involved a transformation of their existing Enterprise Centre, previously a conference facility, into a cutting-edge IoT (Institution of Technology) centre. This comprehensive overhaul encompassed substantial remodelling and refurbishment to create state-of-the-art computer laboratories, teaching areas, collaborative zones, and informal learning spaces.
Our team was committed to ensuring that the design of the IoT Centre would be distinctive and prominently aligned with the Department for Education's branding for Institutes of Technology. This approach was aimed at not only raising awareness and interest in the IoT initiative but also at attracting both learners and potential employer partners.
In collaboration with the University, we played a pivotal role in securing funding from the Department for Education. This involved conducting a feasibility study, exploring various options, and advancing the design to RIBA Stage 2 for the preferred concept. Once funding was secured, we expanded our role and were further appointed by Overbury through the Scape framework to provide architectural and Principal Designer services. We continued to refine the design and oversee its implementation on-site.
This EMIoT project forms a crucial part of the broader IoT initiatives in the East Midlands and represents a joint venture between Loughborough University, Loughborough College, the University of Derby, and Derby College Group.
