Headlands Primary School (Phase 2)

Client: Headlands Primary School

Project Brief: Convert existing space to extend the specialist Woodlands Unit (SEND)

Funding: Northamptonshire County Council

Services: Building Surveying, Contract Administration, Project Management

We were appointed by Headlands Primary School, part of the Northampton Primary Academy Trust (NPAT), to convert an existing space to provide a further extension to their Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) provision.

Headlands Primary School approached us with the aim of extending the current facility to take on an extra class of 10 to become a 50-place provision. Working closely with the Deputy Headteacher and Headteacher, we provided feasibility options for the extension and new layout to cater for this increase. Once confirmed, we managed the works from concept to completion.

Over a period of 12 weeks, we converted the space to create an additional classroom and extended the corridor space to provide better movement around the Woodlands unit, whilst incorporating a new Family Support Office. Additionally, we converted the old, neglected toilets into a new soft play area which will be used as a breakout area for the children to self-regulate.

Further to this, we relocated the old toilet area and provided modern staff and pupil toilets, created a new SENCo meeting room, and created a new storage room. The Headlands Primary School’s extension provides a much-needed solution to the current shortage of SEND places across Northamptonshire.

This project formed part of a two-phased scheme to extend the school’s existing SEND provision - click here to view Phase 1 of the scheme.
